Suz, I have  had a look at the State Library of Victoria’s web site and then gone to their Centre For Adolescent Literature site. They have a number of blogs relevant to teachers and students concerning, obviously adolescent literature issues. The particular one I checked out was, Read Alert. This one is allows readers to to keep up-to-date about the latest info on adolescent literature, current thinking and issues related to youth literature. It’s quite extensive, authoritative and very interesting.

Humour

As a teacher librarian for many years I am particularly interested in promoting reading for pleasure with the intention of improving literacy levels particularly for middle years students.

In order to encourage young secondary students to enjoy and find meaning in their reading they need to be exposed to a range of novels that will engage and excite them.

One of the genres that students of this age respond to is humour. Australia is fortunate to have a talented group of authors who know and understand this notion that humour will engage students, especially reluctant readers. Many of the novels in this humour genre are also particularly suitable for enthusing and engaging reluctant boy readers.

Suitable authors to introduce middle years students to humorous novels are:

Paul Jennings

Felice Arena

Morris Gleitzman

Pat Flynn

Roald Dahl

Max Dann

Margaret Clark

Andy Griffiths

Phillip Gwynne

John Larkin

Anthony Horowitz

Duncan Ball

Terry Denton

Meg Cabot

Anna Fienberg

Wendy Orr

Emily Rodda

Tim Winton

Jacqueline Wilson
